Afag Sultanov AZE was a revelation and should not be surprised if she finds herself in the next edition 101 Best Ippons for her tani otoshi on Lucia Da Silva Teixeira BRA in the final of the -57kg category.

The Azeri, cheered on by a boisterous and adoring group of flag waving fans, showed exceptional skill in executing her techniques and was a worthy winner. If truth be told, Dmytro Solovey UKR went into the final against Sharif Khalilov UZB knowing that his Uzbek opponent was widely seen as favorite to take the gold medal. Khalilov had earlier disposed of the dangerous Kurbanov RUS and shown some powerful throwing ability.

But Solovey did two things perfectly in the final. First he came to the contest with a plan that called for all out attack from the very first moment in order to nullify any chance of Khalilov getting comfortable and setting up his favorite waza. Second, he executed his plan to perfection, throwing the Uzbek beautifully for ippon within the opening 30 seconds to snatch the gold medal. Olexandr Kosinov made it two-for-two for the Ukraine in the men’s categories when he defeated Jose Effron ARG in golden score in the -81kg.

The Argentine scored waza ari early but Kosinov persisted with his own attacks eventually leveling the scores and taking the contest into a rare case in Paralympic Judo of golden score. Effron began to tire under his tremendous efforts. But so too Kosinov, and it was the Ukranian who threw caution to the wind, attacking his opponent with an o uchi gari, uchi mata combination that was almost countered by Effron with te guruma. But Kosinov’s persistence was rewarded and Effron came down on his side and Kosinov was awarded the winning score. Dalidaivis Rodriquez Clark CUB made surprisingly quick work of Zhou Tong CHN whom she strangled unconscious with okuri eri jime to take the gold medal in the -63kg category.
