The competition, which takes place over three days instead of the usual two-day programme, featured five weight classes today in Tashkent: Women -48kg and -52kg and Men -60kg, -66kg and -73kg. "Good afternoon and welcome to Tashkent for the first edition of the Grand Prix in Uzbekistan" were the welcoming words of the presenter at the beginning of the opening ceremony before she added: "We express our gratitude to the IJF and to all the countries which came in our beautiful country of Uzbekistan."

During the opening ceremony, which was held just before the final block starts, Mr. Nasser Al TAMIMI, IJF General Treasurer, who was representing the President of the International Judo Federation, Mr. Marius VIZER, declared: "Dear judo friends, Ladies and Gentlemen, on the name or our President, Mr. Marius Vizer, I would like to congratulate the Uzbek Judo Federation for all the efforts they have put in the organisation of this event. I wish all the best and good luck to all the participating countries and I wish them a good stay in Uzbekistan. Thank you to all the judo lovers in the country and worldwide for following our World Judo Tour."

Then the Minister of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Mr. Minkhajidin KHODJIMATOV, declared the competition open: "Dear friends from the judo family, welcome to Uzbekistan and welcome to Tashkent Grand Prix 2013. Sport is a great ambassador of peace and unity and is a great tool to help people to develop themselves. Honesty, courage and bravery are some of the values represented in judo. Judo is one of the most popular sports in our country.

A huge attention is given to the development of sports in our country. Our best athletes participate in the top level competitions. More than 30,000 athletes practice judo. It is the first time that the Uzbek federation hosts a Grand Prix, and it will be the case for the next four years. I would like to express my gratitude to the President of the IJF, Mr. Vizer and to the President of the Judo Union of Asia, Mr. Obaid Al ANZI. I hope that holding an event here in Tashkent will be one of the most important steps to prepare the next Olympic Games in Rio 2016. I declare the Judo Grand Prix, Tashkent 2013 open."

At the end of the first day of competition, Ilse HEYLEN (BEL) was designated as the best female athlete, and Mirzahid FARMONOV (UZB) as the best male judoka. After the competition, Ilse Heylen declared: "I am really happy. I went to two Grand Prix, and won two gold medals. Actually, I really made a good and strong preparation for the World Championships in Rio. Unfortunately, I lost at the second round again the Cuban and I couldn't enter the repechages. It was important for me to keep going and to show that I was in a very good condition and of course I am happy to take the record of medals won by a Belgium athlete in international events."

For the second time on the occasion of this first day of competition in Tashkent, the Uzbek national flag was raised to celebrate the victory of Mirzahid FARMONOV (UZB) who immobilised Batgerel BATTSETSEG (MGL) for ippon. After an incredible competition day, FARMONOV was awarded with the best mal athlete of the day.

In the first bronze medal fight, two-time world silver medallist, Leandro CUNHA from Brazil, was opposed the bronze medallist of last week Grand Prix, Bakdaulet SABITOV (KAZ). Having difficulties to acclimatise to the adapted rules, CUNHA was disqualified during the preliminary rounds in Almaty as well as in Tashkent, due to leg grabbing. The bronze medal fight started with a distribution of penalties to both fighters and finished with the same observation, none of them being able to score. With only two shido against three, CUNHA this time won the medal. The second bronze medal fight opposed Ulugbek NORKOBILOV (UZB), winner of the Uzbekistan National Cup Samarkand 2012, and Andraz JEREB (SLO), silver medallist at the Mediterranean Games Mersin 2013. Leading the fight with a waza-ari and a yuko, JEREB had to resist until the very last second as NORKOBILOV was putting pressure. Despite a last waz-ari scored by the Uzbek fighter, JEREB remained on the podium.
