JUDO/MMA NEWS: French do not want MMA - French Judo Federation warns judoka will be banned if they teach MMA

The French Judo Federation has warned judoka that they will be banned from the sport if they are caught teaching mixed martial arts (MMA).

The governing body is trying to keep hold of their judo stars following the case involving American Ronda Rousey , who won bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but now teaches MMA.

President of the FJF Jean-Luc Rouge told L'Equipe: "Anyone [in judo] caught teaching MMA, will be removed from the French Judo Federation. MMA is illegal in France.

"All those who teach do not have the right and are liable to be written off. They put the Federation in trouble and if there is serious injury, it will be my fault."

In recent times judo has been losing some of their most talented competitors to the financially lucrative MMA, an example being American Ronda Rousey, the Beiing 2008 Olympic bronze medallist.

Rouge, a former world champion in the under 93 kilogram category, has claimed that MMA has no place on a sports programme.

"These new combat sports [MMA] seem like they come out of a video game," Rouge told L'Equipe.

"These guys are stupid enough to kill each other in front of everyone in a cage and they are well paid, so they would accept.

"Sport is not war!

"We must be able to shake hands and go have a beer together in the end," he added.

The FJF currently has more than 500,000 members.

Here is an excerpt from the Liberty Voice.

by Benjamin Johnson

Over the past several days, the president of the French Judo Federation, Jean-Luc Rouge, has banned any judo coach or competitor from teaching any form of MMA.

Before she was a UFC champion, Ronda Rousey was a professionally trained Judo World Champion, as was her mother before her. This statement has caused both Ronda Rousey and her mother, Dr. AnnMaria De Mars, to speak out against this decision by the French Judo Federation. Taking to Twitter, Dr. Ann Maria says “Ridiculous, keep it up and they’ll have to change the name from IJF (International Judo Federation) to WTF.” Her daughter has backed her up stating, “The IJF isn’t Judo. The judoka are the soul of the art, not the bureaucrats.” Harsh words coming from two influential IJF World Champions.

they are out of line.  Judo players and wrestler need an outlet when it's time to move from the sport. This is a jealous move and i think the body is jealous of jiu jitsu and mma in general.

I hope that Judo Canada and all the other World Judo Federations go along with Judo France regarding this Ban.

Kodokan Judo is a complete Martial Art that is also an Olympic Sport. It is an exciting Sport to play and watch. Most Judoka hold a steady day job so that showing up at work with blackened eyes, broken nose or worse is not good. I agree wholeheartedly with the President of Judo France in banning its members from teaching MMA as this goes totally against Judo's maxim of " Mutual Welfare and Benefit ". Kodokan Judo is actually a very large family spread around the world and we should keep it that way.

A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS:

1) Is there any reason for JUDO to be concerned about loosing athletes to MMA.

2) Should World or National Sports Governing Bodies enforce there right to ban you if you participate in other sports, as an Athlete or Coach.

Please give your view, whether your for or against. Very interested in hearing all sides....
