Judo Grand Prix, Abu Dhabi 2010 - Gold Makes Unexpected Absence Sweeter - Final Results Day 1

Luckily for Sabrina Filzmoser -57kg (AUT) her luggage arrived without a hitch, which is more than can be said for her coach Udo Quellmalz who somehow managed to arrive in the Emirates minus his passport. Stuck in the airport, like a scene from the film Terminal starring Tom Hanks, Quellmalz has been marooned in Dubai whilst waiting for a replacement passport that will enable him to enter the country. In the meantime Filzmoser has been busy winning gold here at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. What will have pleased her just as much as taking top spot on the podium is her semi-final win over the current European champion Corina Caprioriu (ROU). It was Caprioriu who spoiled the party in Vienna by pushing Filzmoser into the silver medal position in front her home crowd. There was more reason to cheer for the girl from Wels in Oberösterreich when she defeated the current Olympic champion, Giulia Quintavalle (ITA) in the final by throwing her with devastating hiza guruma for ippon. All of this without a coach at hand? Well, not quite. Team mate Ludwig Paischer -60kg (who had fought earlier in the day and placed fifth) borrowed a suit form the Armenian coach and was matside to witness a top class performance. Not to be outdone, Quellmalz too was able to watch the IJF live streaming, albeit on his laptop whilst still stuck at the airport. Willeboordse fights tomorrow. Hopefully her luggage will have arrived.
