DAY 1: Judo Grand Prix, Samsun 2013 PLUS "FINAL BLOCK"

                                               

                    

                    

                    

Today (Saturday) was the first day of the inaugural Samsun Grand Prix as the Turkish coastal city’s Tekkekoy Yasar Dogu Sports Hall opened its doors for the first time to host the third World Judo Tour event of the season.

 

Seven weight categories were in action as the women’s -48kg, -52kg, -57kg, -63kg categories and men’s -60kg, -66kg and -73kg categories all took to the tatami.

The new venue was inaugurated in style as the capacity crowd produced a rousing atmosphere to rally behind every Turkish judoka and also acknowledge and respect the efforts of all the world class judoka who stepped onto the tatami.

 

 

During the opening ceremony of the event IJF President, Mr. Marius VIZER, was full of praise for the event and the Turkish Judo Federation: “Mr Minister, dear guests, officials and judoka, on behalf of the IJF and our European judo family and all judoka in the world, I want to thank you very much for organizing the first Samsun Grand Prix in this beautiful hall. The Grand Prix is the first event to be staged in this venue and I would like to say a special thank you to the Turkish Minister of Sport, Mr. Suat KILIC, and the government for supporting the Grand Prix. We wish good luck to Istanbul in their bid for the 2020 Olympic Games and good luck to all judoka competing here in Samsun.”

 

Turkish Judo Federation President, Mr Fatih UYSAL, also addressed the crowd and was universal in his praise for those involved in helping to stage the event: “We’ve hosted 40 countries; we’ve very happy and we thank you all for your support.”

EJU President, Mr. Sergey SOLOVEYCHIK, said: “Dear friends, as President of the EJU I’m very proud of the achievements of the Turkish Judo Federation and we are very proud to have such a strong organisation in Europe.“

Turkey’s Minister of Sports, Suat KILIC, said: “Dear IJF President, EJU President, dear colleagues, guests and everyone who is close to one of Turkey’s most beautiful cities. We are very proud to host all of you for this great event on the way to 2020 Olympic Games for which we are candidates for in Istanbul. We are all here to open the competition and thank you for your support at this great event."

 

During the opening ceremony, Mr. Vizer presented the 'IJF World Judo Tour Gold Card' to the Minister of youth and Sports, Mr. Suat KILIC.

WOMEN

-48kg: VAN SNICK reigns supreme 

World number four and London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Charline VAN SNICK (BEL) clashed with Kay KRAUS (GER) in the -48kg final. KRAUS had already secured a career-best result as she was assured of her first Grand Prix medal and VAN SNICK ensured she would have to wait to top the medal podium as the Belgian seized the moment and threw for ippon and Samsun Grand Prix gold.VAN SNICK opened her tournament with a commanding victory over Dilara LOKMANHEKIM (TUR) after a slick execution of a sankaku-jime which forced the home judoka to submit.

 

 

VAN SNICK sealed a place in the final by edging out Alesya KUZNETSOVA (RUS) while Kay KRAUS booked her spot by firing past Ebru SAHIN (TUR) in 75 seconds.

The first bronze medal was won by KUZNETSOVA who defeated MOSCATT (ITA) by ippon. The second bronze medal was destined for the hosts Turkey as two of their top judoka, Ebru SAHIN (TUR) and Sumeyye AKKUS (TUR), went toe-to-toe for a place on the medal podium. AKKUS narrowly edged out SAHIN by a yuko to win bronze and lapped up the ovation in front of her home crowd as she raised her hand in victory.

-52kg: KELMENDI strikes again

Majlinda KELMENDI (KOS) made her third consecutive World Judo Tour final as she continued her scintillating form which saw her win silver at the Paris Grand Slam and gold at the Dusseldorf Grand Prix. The unstoppable KELMENDI sealed victory against the Dusseldorf Grand Prix bronze medallist KRAEH, Mareen (GER) by ippon in just 75 seconds. KELMENDI booked her place in final with victory over Natalia KUZIUTINA (RUS) while KRAEH defeated Yulia RYZHOVA (RUS).

 

 

The first bronze medal went to Tsolmon ADIYASAMBUU (MGL) who saw off RYZHOVA by ippon while the second bronze medal was won by Natalia KUZIUTINA (RUS) who found another gear to with 30 seconds left in the contest to defeat Mariia BUIOK (UKR) by ippon.

-57kg: FILZMOSER secures gold for Austria

The evergreen Sabrina FILZMOSER (AUT) produced a vintage performance to overcome Johanna MUELLER (GER) to add to her ever-growing collection of World Judo Tour medals. FILZMOSER went a waza-ari up with only 50 seconds remaining and that proved enough for a victory as the vastly experienced Austrian coolly kept MUELLER at bay to see out the remaining time.

 

 

FILZMOSER reached the final by way of a victory over Irina ZABLUDINA (RUS) as MUELLER saw off the challenge of Tina ZELTNER (AUT).

The first bronze medal went to 20-year-old ZELTNER who bounced back from a semi-final to emphatically thwart the medal aspirations of Nora GJAKOVA (KOS) by ippon. The second bronze medals was won by Irina ZABLUDINA (RUS) in a highly-competitive contest against Ivelina ILIEVA (BUL). ZABLUDINA did enough as her sole waza-ari score was opposed only by two yuko scores from ILIEVA.

-63kg: EMANE triumphs for France

World number three and London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Gevrise EMANE (FRA) topped the -63kg medal podium after throwing Yarden GERBI (ISR) with a minute left in their absorbing -63kg final. Gevrise EMANE (FRA) ensured a place in the final with a win over Kathrin UNTERWURZACHE (AUT) by waza-ari while Yarden GERBI bested teammate Alice SCHLESINGER (ISR) by ippon in a hard-fought contest.

 

 

The first bronze medal went to SCHLESINGER who struck back from her semi-final loss to record a comprehensive win over Edwige GWEND (ITA) by ippon having already registered a waza-ari . The second bronze medal was won by UNTERWURZACHE who took the fight to Nina MILOSEVIC (SLO) to claim victory by ippon.

-60kg: DASHDAVAA powers to victory

Budapest European Open silver medallist Amartuvshin DASHDAVAA (MGL) overcome Warsaw European Open winner Yeldos SMETOV (KAZ) to win gold. DASHDAVAA powered his way to the top of the medal podium as he saw off the commendable challenge of SMETOV by a single waza-ari score.

 

 

DASHDAVAA defeated Vugar SHIRINLI (AZE) by waza-ari to book a place in the final while SMETOV prevailed in the all-Kazhkstan affair with Askhat TELMANOV (KAZ).

The first bronze medal went to SHIRINLI who dominated Artiom ARSHANSKI (ISR) as he registered a full house on the scoreboard with a yuko and waza-ari setting him in control to go on and seize the bout by ippon. The second bronze medal went to Robert MSHVIDOBADZE (RUS) who took the second Grand Prix medal of his flourishing career by seeing off TELMANOV courtesy of two yuko scores and a waza-ari.

-66kg: ZANTARAIA wins big in new category

Former world champion Georgii ZANTARAIA (UKR) recorded his most significant win since moving up to the -66kg category last year as he proved too strong for Golan POLLACK (ISR). ZANTARAIA took control of the contest with two yuko scores and evaded POLLACK’s attacks with his trademark aerial agility to clinch a highly-impressive gold medal.

 

 

POLLACK sealed a final berth by unceremoniously throwing world number nine FARMONOV (UZB) for a thunderous ura-nage while ZANTARAIA defeated Asian champion Sergey LIM (KAZ) in 80 seconds to take his place in the final. The first bronze medal went to Kamal KHAN-MAGOMEDOV (RUS) who ended KIM’s bid for bronze by ippon. The second bronze medal was captured by Dimitri DRAGIN (FRA) who defeated world number nine Mirzahid FARMONOV (UZB) by ippon

-73kg: MOGUSHKOV surprises on category debut

Musa MOGUSHKOV (RUS) produced a faultless debut in the -73kg category as he surprised London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Nyam-Ochir SAINJARGAL (MGL) by throwing him for ippon after 74 seconds. MOGOSHKOV, who didn’t concede a single score all day, caught his rivals off guard as he looked at home at his new weight. SAINJARGAL had silenced the home crowd when he defeated Hasan VANLIOGLU (TUR) in the semi-final as MOGUSHKOV surged past Pierre DUPRAT (FRA) at the same stage by ippon.

 

 

The first bronze medal went to Baku Grand Prix bronze medallist Zebeda REKHVIASHVILI (GEO) who surprised Paris Grand Slam winner DUPRAT be edging him out by a single yuko. The second bronze medal ignited the crowd as VANLIOGLU (TUR) valiantly battled for an opening against London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist LEGRAND. However, while both men worked tenaciously, LEGRAND prevailed as VANLIOGLU received a second shido for passivity to give the victory to the French.
