(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – The Continental Crown, a USA Judo Senior E-Level Point Tournament was held on Saturday in Seattle with nearly 200 players in attendance.

The tournament drew players from throughout the United States and Canada, including 2010 Senior World Team members Travis Stevens (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE) and Michael Eldred (Fruitland, Idaho / Western Idaho Judo Institute).

Stevens, a four-time World Cup medalist, fought up from 81kg to 90kg for the event.

Competing in front of a hometown crowd, the Tacoma native went 3-0 to win the division, defeating Sidhartha Raj (San Jose, Calif. / USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State University) in the final. Since the tournament was run with a modified double elimination system, Raj then fought repechage winner Matthew Quinn (San Bruno, Calif. / Cahill’s Judo) for the silver medal. Raj won his fourth match of the day to place second overall.

Eldred, a five-time World Cup medalist who competes in the Crown nearly every year, won the 73kg division after defeating Jimmy Kim (Belmont, Calif. / Cahill’s Judo) in the final. Kim dropped down to the repechage to fight for the silver medal, but Josh Villani (Tacoma, Wash. / Ippon Judo Dojo) earned the win to place second.

On the women’s side, four-time Senior Nationals medalist Tracy Nagai (Bellevue, Wash. / Budokan Judo) fought up from 52kg to 57kg, but a single loss in the round robin division meant that she, Veronica Graves (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) and Alisha Galles (Albuquerque, N.M. / PAL Judo) were in a three-way tie with two wins each.

Although Graves lost to Nagai in their opening round, she earned two wins by ippon (instant win), including one over Galles, to earn gold in the division. Galles defeated Nagai as her second of two ippon wins to place second. Nagai placed third based on points earned as her wins came from yuko and ippon scores.
