Chuck Jefferson began his Judo training at 5 years old under coach Ernie Smith at the Barstow Judo Club. Chuck had an instant love for the sport and earned his first junior national gold medal at 7 years old. He continued his training with Coach Smith compiling close to twenty junior national medals. At age 18 Chuck graduated from Barstow High School and moved on to train with the legendary judo program at San Jose State University under head coach Yoshihiro Uchida. It was now time to make the transition into the senior ranks of USA Judo. In his sophomore year Chuck broke through to get his first medal (bronze) at the senior nationals. In 1999 he completed his degree earning a B.A. in Communication Studies.
During his collegiate judo career, Chuck established himself, as a top prospect for USA Judo being one of the very few people who won 4 straight collegiate national titles. After his graduation Chuck started a career with Swain Sports under the guidance of coach Mike Swain. To this day Chuck still works for Swain Sports which provides him with a very flexible career to ensure his ability to train and travel for Judo competitions. In addition to his full-time job and training schedule, Chuck is also an Assistant coach at San Jose State University.
